Creating a Clean and Respectful Training Environment
At Raptor Academy, we’re committed to providing a safe, welcoming space for everyone who steps on the mats. Cleanliness isn’t just about comfort—it’s about respect, safety, and responsibility. These hygiene standards help ensure that every student can train confidently and safely.
Personal Hygiene Standards
No Contagious Skin Infections
Contagious skin infections—including ringworm, staph, and impetigo—are not permitted on the mats under any circumstance, even if covered or wrapped. If you suspect you have a skin issue:
Stop training immediately
Seek medical attention
Begin prescription treatment before returning
Over-the-counter remedies are often ineffective. Quick, professional care ensures your recovery and protects your training partners.
Come to Class Clean
Shower before training
Avoid perfumes, colognes, or strong-smelling lotions
Do not wear makeup that could transfer to others during training
We train in close contact—keep your hygiene neutral and non-irritating for your partners.
Trim Your Nails
Fingernails and toenails must be short and smooth
Use a nail file to remove sharp edges
Scratches and cuts from nails are easily avoidable with regular trimming
Secure Long Hair
Tie hair back tightly enough that it won’t fall into your partner’s face
Avoid metal clips or hard accessories that could poke or scratchIf your partner could get a mouthful of your hair, it’s not secured well enough.
Gear Hygiene
Wash After Every Session
Everything you train in—rash guards, gis, spats, belts, and knee pads—must be washed after every use.
If it smells fine out of the wash but stinks during class, it’s time to retire it
Products like vinegar or OxiClean can extend life, but eventually, replacement is necessary
Look for deals on gear sites like BJJHQ or community trade groups
Mouthguards
Rinse after use
Disinfect regularly with antibacterial mouthwash
Store in a clean case, not loose in your gym bag
Headgear
If machine-washable, wash it
If not, use disinfectant wipes after each use
Never store sweaty gear in sealed bags without cleaning it first
Water Bottles
Wash regularly—especially lids and straws
Bacteria builds up quickly if left uncleaned
Hygiene in the Gym
Shoes Stay Off the Mats
Street shoes are never allowed on the mats
Use indoor-only sandals or gym-provided slippers when walking off-mat or into bathrooms
Our restrooms are cleaned regularly, but proper footwear helps us all keep the space sanitary
Respect the Shared Space
Throw out gum in lined trash bins only
Check your area before leaving: no tape, wrappers, or forgotten gear
If you bleed during training, alert a coach or staff member so we can disinfect the area immediately

By training at Raptor Academy, you agree to uphold these hygiene standards. This is how we protect our community, preserve our mats, and show care for our teammates.
Thank you for doing your part. Let’s keep Raptor clean, safe, and strong—together.
